Here's a story fragment I started working on a long time ago, and may actually continue, some day.

It had been a year since the silver death had arrived in the valley, consuming building and being alike with its covetous tendrils. Despite its all-consuming appetite, once finished on the valley, the silver and red ooze contented itself within its plague-ridden trough, awaiting those who would investigate it. It was not required to wait long. Only hours after the initial contact, the first would-be savior appeared on the scene; a doctor, come to heal the diseased. As is often the case, however, he who would cure the disease was most horridly afflicted. The next to visit the valley found him barely three paces into the infected area, a scalpel grasped in one hand, both wrists slit deeply, the blood still flowing out of them despite the days since the wounds were inflicted.
